Commercial Manager - Construction

Location: Middlesex

Basic Salary: £TBC

POST RESPONSIBILITIES
The role is to lead the Commercial Team, supporting the operating divisions, to deliver maximum profit to the organisation.
• Serve as member of the VGC Board
• Complete a monthly commercial report for all group operating companies for the Board meeting.
• Develop relationships with the key contacts & clients in order to manage current and future contracts
• Lead commercial activities on projects to ensure company achieves full and maximum value for all work executed & to ensure retentions are paid on time.
• Provide strategic commercial advice at all stages of the construction process (including tender stage) and provide practical advice to Management on contractual matters, for projects under their control.
• Knowledge & understanding of Mainline Rail, LU & JCT contracts.
• Assist in the preparation and submission of tenders.
• Estimating
• Formally review of all tenders before submission to Client
• Ensure all members of the team observe the processes & standards as outlines in the Business Management System
• Attends the monthly CVR meetings – ensuring the team have prepared and distributed the figures in a timely manner for review.
• Review all contract documentation generated throughout the contract to ensure the recovery of all entitlements and contract compliance from a commercial standpoint
• Reports to the board on Commercial Matters on key issues
• Attends formal contract reviews
• Attend weekly cost meetings.
• Project cost planning & ensuring the Project Managers understand the costings.
• Ensures formalised procurement of Sub-Contractors and that performance is monitored.
• Ensures that Sub-Contract performance results are maintained and that any issue arising are dealt with promptly.
• Review project performance; ensure that costs are being recorded accurately
• Produces and reconciles the monthly accounts and forecasts in conjunction with the financial controller.
• Managing early warnings and change orders
• Risk process champion
• Applications and cash management
• Ensures commercial data collection for KPIs & reports on trends.
• Audit responsibility for commercial procedures
• Review all standard commercial documentation on an ongoing basis and implement changes when required. (In line with Business Management Systems)
• Prompt final account finalisation
• Manage dispute resolution
• Line Manager to Quantity Surveyor, Credit Controller and Buyer – involved in recruitment, performance review, training plans etc.
• Develop company Commercial strategy for the Group
• Challenging outcomes to drive efficiency and profit improvement
• Responsible for overseeing all procurement for plant and technical services

COMPETENCE
Essential Knowledge
• 3rd Level qualification in QS or related Discipline
• Professional membership to RICS or CIOB (Preferable)
• IT literate
Essential Skills
• Minimum five years senior commercial level within a minimum of a £15M turnover operation
• Stable track record with a record of delivering profit
• Estimating Experience
• Sound commercial management of projects - Sound negotiation and influencing skills
• Delivering continuous improvement
• Sound appreciation of procurement processes and methods - supply chain management
• Understand and embrace the principles and practices of Relationship Management
• Good internal and external customer relationship management
• Risk and Value Management
